Nick, I think what is happening is the exact reverse of what you wrote. Pages is using macOS rendering, which always autohints outlines (and ignores the original hinting if any). InDesign uses the hi…3 -

Any time I extrapolate, I instantiate the result as a new master so I can tweak it directly. The only exception is in newfangled workflows without corner masters... but these are tricky to get right.3
